How did this recording come about?
I had got back from 2 week tour out to Texas and back with Ethereal Sea and had to unwind before returning to normal life. I rented a cabin up near Mt. Hood in Rhododendron, Oregon and brought my 8 track and some gear along.
What kind of gear we talking?
Brought my Gretsch G5657T Electromatic Center Block Jr., 12 string Fender acoustic, my trusty VOX Mini 3 G2, Tascam Portastudio, Audio-Technica AT2020 and a SM57. Additionally my trusty gold bass I built from a kit and the Hohner Blues Harps. I brought a hi-hat, a 18” crash and my snare. I used a drawer from the bathroom for the kick drum!
How much did drugs and alcohol have to do with these sessions?
NEXT QUESTION! haha
How did you choose the cover songs to be recorded?
I had been digging the Crazy Horse song for awhile. When I get songs stuck in my head, sometimes the only way I get them out is to play em. Same with my friend Morgan’s song as well. The day before I left to the cabin I was playing the Crazy Horse song and the Neil Young song that came on YouTube after it (Don’t Cry No Tears) got stuck in my head. I learned it and did it for soundcheck initially, but it ended up turning out good so I decided to include it. I’ve always liked that song from the Zuma album.
How did “Big Ass Truck” come about?
Haha I’ve had this one for a long time. Seems like everywhere there goes around the joke when you see a big truck, you assume the guy has a small you know what! I did a faster version of this song with a drum loop a long time ago but I wanted to record the slower version like I did with the ol smokestacks back in the day.
Can you talk about the devil song?
Yeah after my old band, I think I still had a bit of metal and fast guitar in me haha so it kind of came out of nowhere. It wrote itself pretty quickly to be honest. A tale of good and evil.
Thanks?
Yeah I gotta thank my gal Brooklynn for understanding I had to decompress with some alone time, which we all need. I don’t think most of us take enough time to reflect and spend time with nature and real fresh air. Thanks to Neil Young & Crazy Horse for the inspiration and Morgan for letting me include her song on the release!
